Candidate David Alessio

Supporting D300 A Longtime Family Affair For Alessio

This page provides all of the information that we have been able to gather on Mr. David Alessio to date. Mr. Alessio is one of three candidates from Dundee township (the others are Joe Stevens and Dennis Cleveland).

Dave Alessio lives in Algonquin with his wife Laura (a D300 alum) and their three children. Mr. Alessio's kids currently attend D300 elementary and middle schools. He is also the only candidate with children currently in District elementary schools. Both Mr. Alessio and his wife are and have been very active in the District and the community for many years. Mr. Alessio was appointed to the BOE in March 2006 to fill the position vacated by Linda Rafanello. Mr. Alessio is running for election to the BOE because he believes in public education and D300 and wants to make sure that our District is strong for all kids in all of the D300 communities.

In addition, we received answers from Mr. Alessio (in italics) specifically on the following additional questions that voters have asked about:

  1. What groups, if any, are backing your campaign?

There is nobody backing my campaign except family, friends, and individuals in the community. I will accept endorsements from anybody who agrees with my goals, and would appreciate support through notes to your friends or neighbors. I am not accepting money from any district contractors, unions, or either side of last year's referendum campaign - Advance300 or FTN. This will prevent any question of my motivation while serving on the board. I will always try to do what is best for the whole district.

  2. What was your vote on the outsourcing of transportation and why?

I voted for the outsourced transportation with Durham. This saddened me, but I couldn't support continued deficit spending in the transportation fund. This would have required money be transferred from other funds to support transportation. Three years ago the transportation fund had a million dollar accumulated deficit. The district and the union worked to create a plan to erase this deficit over three years. But despite their efforts, the fund accumulated an even greater deficit projected to be two million dollars at the end of this fiscal year. The contract with Durham is projected to erase this deficit and change this fund to a surplus within three years. And with a signed contract, much of the risk is transferred away from the District and taxpayers onto the contractor. The District will have a transportation manager to monitor performance of all contractors, and the board chose not to sell the buses and facilities so that there will be more options at the end of the contract.

A possible piece of legislation was discussed which would have moved Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund contributions outside the PTELL tax caps to increase the amount of money available to the District while retaining in-house employees. But this would increase the tax rate, and I do not feel this would be in line with the promises made along with the referendum questions.

  3. Some people have accused D300, you and your fellow Board members of inflating projected numbers of incoming students in order to convince the voting public to support the 2006 referenda, do you agree? Why or why not?

The timelines that the District obtained from villages and developers have been found to be aggressive. However, the permits are still issued, the development plans are approved, and none of the builders have left the area. So the timeline might be delayed, but the houses will still be built and the students will still arrive.

The temporary slowdown in housing is good news for the district. Fewer teachers needed to be hired this year than was earlier predicted. And the third new elementary school approved with the construction referendum has been postponed until needed. The future location of this school will be determined by need as the developments open up.
